Before I had an ugly house, now I have a princess house. -Sofía Aguirre, age 7
Sofía and her family were living in a dark and dreary home. There was a single cable with a light bulb strung across the room. The kitchen walls were about to collapse because of deteriorated wood and zinc. The home had no drinking water, so they had to walk to a nearby stream to collect water daily. Sofía's mother, María Rosibel, a single mother, makes tortillas and sells them to provide for her family. Because she does not have a safe and healthy kitchen, she has to go to someone else's home each morning at 5:30 am to begin making the tortillas and share her profits of $28.35 per week with the house's owner.
Family Life Missions met the Aguirre family through their local church, one of our partners providing child protection and family preservation training and resources through our FLM team. Families apply to be accepted into each church's FLM Family Preservation Program, Building Dreams, and our FLM comprehensive care team follows up and monitors each family's progress throughout the process.
This summer, a mission team from Riverchase Church of Christ from Birmingham, Alabama, met and served the Aguirre family, including María Rosibel's mother and two brothers who live next to them. The team improved the home's health by sealing the walls, installing a safe and functional electrical system, putting a new roof on the house, and constructing a safe kitchen area.
As part of our Family Preservation program, we will follow up with the family and help María Rosibel establish a small business through our entrepreneurship program, where she will receive start-up money and learn how to make a business plan. As the family continues in the program, we will be able to help them have a healthier home, both physically and spiritually.
The joy on Sofía's face said it all when she told the Riverchase team that she now has a "princess house" where she can live and play in a more beautiful space.

When the smell of tortillas, beans, and rice comes out of the Casa Roja, the children at our Por Los Niños Christian School know it is almost time for lunch. As they line up, they are ready to eat a delicious meal prepared by Rossy and Melvin Sabillon. The Sabillon family participates in our Family Preservation program. After attending our entrepreneurship workshops and developing a plan for a catering business, they had the opportunity to rent a kitchen and prepare meals for our students. Not only does the Sabillon Family receive financial support through this endeavor, but many students also receive a nourishing lunch at an affordable price.
“The training sessions that Family Live Missions has provided for us have helped us fulfill our dreams and purpose of learning how to start an entrepreneurship,” Melvin said.
Rossy explained that the family was financially in a very difficult situation until they began their business. “We give thanks to God because He takes care of all these details.”
With four out of 10 people in Honduras unemployed, our Entrepreneurship Program gives families the tools and resources to start and run successful businesses. When the family began their business and saw that it would provide food for their family, Melvin said, “I couldn’t believe what was happening. I have seen the glory of God.”
The Entrepreneurship program helps provide financial stability for a family, helps them grow their faith in God, and helps them learn to lean on Him. “With God meeting my needs, I feel a very close relationship with God, like father-daughter,” Rossy said.

Every morning in Catacamas, long before the sun rises over the hills of Honduras, Matías González begins his day with determination. He heads to his small corn plot to tend the crops that will soon become tortillas—the food and foundation of his family’s livelihood.
His wife, Meylin, is already at home preparing the firewood and grinding the corn by hand. Their children—Gabriela (12), Antony (10), and Cristy (8)—are getting ready for school, each step guided by the love and sacrifice of their parents.
Together, Matías and Meylin run a modest tortilla stand in the local marketplace. They’ve worked hard to build something out of almost nothing. But the reality is still harsh. Their monthly income is just $230. They live without electricity. There’s no running water in their home—they walk over half a mile to their church each day to carry drinking water for their family.
Even with these challenges, they are not without vision.
They dream of more—not just for themselves, but for their children. That’s why they applied to our Family Preservation Programs, Building Dreams/Inspiring Hope through their local church. They plan to launch a new venture: selling fresh vegetables alongside their tortillas. With just $100 in seed capital from Family Life Missions along with training and support, they’re taking a courageous step forward.
Their hope? To raise their monthly income to $385. Enough to breathe a little easier. Enough to put nutritious food on the table, work on building a safer and healthier home, and buy school supplies for their children.
This family isn’t asking for a handout. They’re asking for an opportunity—and they are ready to work for it.

I can remember like yesterday exactly where I was when I heard this sentence: “Ministry is about relationships.” Twenty-seven years later this sentence still has a profound influence on how I engage in ministry. I believe Maya Angelou was on to something when she wrote, "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." God has made us to be seen, to be heard, and to be loved.
This is the fourth summer our church from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, has sent a team to Catacamas, Honduras, to partner with Family Life Missions. This summer we had a team of 12 make the trip. What I have grown to appreciate about Family Life Missions is how they value relational ministry through the context of the local church.
Our mornings began by our team leading a devotional for the children who attend school on their property. Without fail after each devotional the children would linger around wanting to give us a hug or a high five. Our team did a phenomenal job making sure every child felt seen, felt heard and felt loved.
