Update June 29, 2009

Yuni turned 18 in January.  She has started her second semester in college. In Honduras the college
semesters are shorter than in the United States.  She is attending a college in Catacamas.  She recently
moved into the transition cottage, PLN 2, and seems to enjoy being with the older kids.  She stayed longer
in cottage one to help with some of the new younger children.  She enjoys cooking and helps Olga, the
house mother for PLN 2, in the kitchen as much as possible.

Yuni Hernandez - Bio

Yuni, at the age of 3 ½ was the size of an 18 month old child.  She was admitted to the Por Los Niños home
along with her sister, Letty.  Yuni suffered from severe malnutrition prior to coming to PLN.  Due to severe
malnutrition at birth, Yuni spent the first month of her life in a hospital in Juticalpa.  She was hospitalized
many times.  Due to her chronic malnutrition and lack of stimulation, Yuni was unable to walk and only spoke
a few words.  It was not known if proper care and nutrition would correct the lack of normal development.
Along with malnutrition, Yuni also suffered from parasites and reoccurring ear and chest infections.

Today, Yuni is excelling in school and looks forward to a bright career.  Her mother passed away from
cancer after the girls were admitted to PLN.  Yuni and her sister, Letty, keep a close bond.  The only health
problem that Yuni suffers from how is Bells Palsy.  Yuni is a quiet person who likes time to herself, but she
also enjoys having a good time with the other girls at PLN.
