Wilkin Diaz
Wilkin entered the Por Los Niños home in April 1999. Wilkin is the youngest of 7 children in a family which
was in a desperate struggle to survive. Abandoned by the father four years ago, this family only ate when
food was given to them by kindhearted neighbors. Wilkin’s mother suffers from severe epilepsy and is
unable to work. This left the family to scavenge and steal for food. Upon admission to the home, Wilkin, 4,
could not walk due to the severity of his malnutrition. His legs were very thin and could not support the
weight of his body. He lacked even the strength to hold his head and body upright. Wilkin immediately
began treatment for malnutrition and parasites. He also received physical therapy three times daily to
strengthen his muscles and encourage him to walk.
Today, Wilkin runs all over the village. He still has a limp but he does not let it slow him down. Wilkin has an
infectious grin and an energetic personality. He never meets a stranger!
