Director's Report
Wow! 2009, where did the time go? As a child, I heard a comment, “I haven’t
seen you in 20 years.” I thought, “How could that be? 20 years is a lifetime.” I
also remember saying, “I’ll never be old enough to drive.” And, not to forget, “I can’
t wait to be on my own.” With a smile my parents said, “Time passes faster the
older you get.” I now think the smile was a smirk. Time does pass faster because as
an adult it is coupled with daily responsibilities. There is never enough time for
everything. Let's take some time and catch you up on some wonderful events at
Family Life Missions.
Once upon a time LaRue and Richard Hilton began a work, a dream of helping
children. Their love for children was the driving force for dedicating themselves to
Family Life Missions. They rented a house and took in a handful of destitute
children. They carefully crafted a program to care for children and planned well into
the future. Plans were laid for long term care knowing someday these children will
grow up. As with our own children, it’s hard to imagine them as adults. Time
continues, whether or not we want it too. Although Richard and LaRue have
passed the mantel on, the dream is still alive. The current Board of Directors, at
their January meeting, hammered out a long term Strategic Plan. They extended
the path the Hilton’s laid, ensuring the work would continue to grow and
accomplish its mission.
We all knew the time would come and it is here! Keydi, age 22, and Noé, age 20,
are our first to leave the nest as adults, ready to reenter their community. We
know they’ll be making a difference in the lives of others, just as planned. They
have been at Por Los Niños for over fifteen years. I know their sponsors must be
very proud.
Time has been good to Family Life Missions. Much has been accomplished already
this year. We have new house parents for cottage number four and Les and
Jeannell are excited. Les is confident with their above average education these
two will have a positive impact on the village.
Timing is everything. Our most recent blessing was notification we qualified for the
“Denton Program”. This is a military program on a “space available” basis allowing
humanitarian goods to be shipped without charge to a U.S. Air Force destination.
Our shipment was scheduled for handling by the 172nd Airlift Wing in Jackson,
Mississippi. Becky and I prepared seven (7) pallets of hard goods (towels, sheets,
soap, shampoo, etc.) to ship to the village. With a new cottage and more children,
these are really needed. The pallets left for Honduras on February 9.
A farm tractor was also slated for shipment, but problems were encountered.
Trouble began in Starkville, but a generous Starkville mechanic made repairs at no
charge. A trucking company out of Tupelo, Mississippi donated equipment to haul
the tractor and pallets to the air base. FLM only helped with fuel cost. Once there,
you guessed it, more problems. Murphy’s Law states, “If anything can go wrong, it
will.” Problems were uncovered one at a time. The tractor could not fly until all
problems were repaired. So, mechanics in Jackson were called upon to help. A
local company donated their time so our quest could move forward. The 172nd
Airlift Wing went beyond the call of duty. Time slipped away and the Airmen
responsible for approving and loading stayed despite their shift ending. Due to the
generosity of all these people donating time, expertise, parts and their equipment,
this tractor has passed inspection. The tractor has now arrived at PLN. Time does
make a difference!
Time, the Hilton’s dream continues as our first two children are leaving the nest.
PLN now consists of four cottages and many more needy children. As new children
arrive to fill house #4, more child sponsors are needed. Please remember these
children when talking with your circle of influence. Encourage others to
experience the joy of helping needy children, and ask them to be a part
of our team. Your passion and your generous support made
this mission possible. As the work grows, the need for support
grows. Please keep this work in your prayers, and the
blessings will come. “Thank You” is never enough. Seeing the
fruits of your love will no doubt warm your hearts and bring a
smile to your face, as you have done for so many children over
the years.
