Rosa Munguia
Prior to coming to Por Los Niños, Rosa lived with her elderly grandfather. Her father abandoned the family
and her mother was unable to feed her children. Having lived a life of abject poverty with her grandfather in
Las Jagulyas, a remote mountain in the department of Olancho, Rosa has met the challenge of a new life
with courage and a vivid interest in everything new. What a change… from a bed of sticks shared with her
siblings to a bed of her own…from hunger to plenty of food! The first few days in the home, Rosa could not
take her eyes off all the food in the home. We would remove the food from the table so that she and her
siblings would not eat so much that they would become sick. It is so difficult for a child who has always
known hunger to realize that there will always be another meal and she will never truly be hungry again.
Upon admittance to the home, Rosa suffered from anemia, parasites and grade two malnutrition.
Rosa no longer worries about being hungry. She is quiet and likes to read and write. She is doing well at
PLN II and is grateful that her future now looks bright!
