Marian is 5 years old. She's doing well in kindergarten. Marian is usually very quiet and timid. She's a little
small for her age, like many Hondurans. She often prefers to entertain herself with a toy or coloring book.
Marian Jose Mejia Guifarro - Bio
Marian entered Por Los Niños, Cottage 1 on December 18, 2008 with an order of ingression by youth and
family court judge. She is 5 years old. Marian’s younger sister, Jensy Jossela Castellanos Mejia was also
ingressed the same day. Jossela is 3 years old.
Marian and Jossela have 2 older sisters who live with an adoptive grandmother. They are 12 and 10
respectively.
Their mother requested help from Por Los Niños and signed all the legal documents transferring
guardianship. She is Denia Patricia Mejia Guifarro and lives in Guayabito, Olancho, which is a small
community about 10 miles from Catacamas. Denia was married to the father of the three oldest children and
he built the house where she still lives. He was killed a few years ago while Denia was still pregnant with
Marian. So Marian never knew her father. Denia, like so many Honduran women, has no marketable skills.
She has sold everything of value which she had and the house is falling into disrepair. She doesn’t know her
own family, having been adopted herself at a young age. Her adoptive mother has “retired” and has helped
as much as she can but is not able to completely support Denia and the children. Denia allowed a man to
move in with her out of desperation and Jossela is the only tangible result of that brief relationship. He
expressed no interest when informed that Jossela was to be sent to Por Los Niños.
Both children responded very quickly to their new house parents. They appear to be very happy and have
adjusted well to life at the village. Marian informed me that she needs new clothes while waving an unopened
package of underwear and Jossela thinks she needs a pair of boots like Rosita’s. Marian will attend
kindergarten beginning in February 2009.
