Born May 4, 1998
Luz Martinez
Luz came to Por Los Niños from the mountains.  It was a tough life there.  She lived with her father, which
was 72, and her mother who was not able to care for her or her two siblings because of her mental
condition.  They all lived in a structure that looked like a chicken coop.  There was no electricity, no indoor
plumbing, no running water and no beds for any of them to sleep, only dirt floors.  Luz had never left the
mountains before she came to live at Por Los Niños.  Luz had parasites and malnutrition upon being
admitted to the home.  She had no self confidence and was very shy.

Luz has adjusted quickly to PLN III with Elda and Edgar as her new parents.  The other kids helped in every
way they could to make her feel welcome.  She is doing great in school.  She had very little school in the
mountains.  Karla, her teacher, said she is making good progress.  She has a beautiful smile and loves to
ride bicycles.
