Letty Hernandez
Leticia was admitted to Por Los Niños at the age of four with her sister, Yuni. Abandoned by their father,
this family existed in the depths of poverty. Letty’s mother struggled to care for her five children, but was
unable to meet the basic necessities of food and shelter. Her mother was a cook who worked six days a
week. While her mother worked, Letty was left in the care of her ten year old sister. Unable to keep up on
the rent on a small one room mud block house, the family was put out. Letty’s mother tried to repair a run
down stick and mud hut to give the family shelter. All members of the family suffered severe malnutrition.
Letty suffered from malnutrition for all her life previous to coming to PLN. She had been hospitalized in the
past and was the size of a three year old. She also suffered from parasites and rotted teeth. Letty’s eyes
were always sad.
Letty still suffers from learning disabilities due to her early childhood, but she is no longer sad or hungry.
Letty enjoys life at PLN II. Letty’s mother died from cancer after Letty and Yuni were admitted to PLN. Letty
now considers PLN her family!
