Erika Maria Reyes
Erika Maria entered the Por Los Niños home in November 2000 at age 6. Abandoned by their father, this
family struggled to survive. A total of eight people, including Erika Maria’s grandmother, lived in a small one
room hut the size of a small bathroom made of rough wooden planks. Living conditions were extremely
poor. Water had to be hauled from a neighboring house. There was no electricity. Family members slept
on the dirt floor. Unable to provide proper nourishment and care for her children, Erika Maria’s mother left
Catacamas in search of work leaving the children in the care of their elderly grandmother. Upon admission
to the home Erika Maria suffered from malnutrition, parasites, anemia and a serious urinary tract infection.
Her social development appeared to be normal.
Erika Maria is now a vibrant child and lives in PLN III. She loves to play with the other children on the play
structures. She also enjoys riding the bicycles. Erika Maria is a smart girl and excels in school.
