Delmer Aguilar
Delmer entered Por Los Niños in April 1999 at age 4. Abandoned by their father, this family struggled to
survive. Delmer’s mother raised subsistence crops with his grandfather in the mountains near Culmi while
his grandmother provided care for Delmer, his 4 siblings and seven of her own children. A total of thirteen
people lived in a small one room hut. Unable to provide proper nourishment and care for even her own
children, Delmer’s grandmother could no longer care for him and his siblings. Delmer’s uneducated mother
wanted to provide for her children and secured a very low paying job in Catacamas. She was still homeless
and unable to provide for her children and turned to Por Los Niños for assistance.
Upon admission to the home, Delmer was the size of a 3 year old. He suffered from malnutrition and
parasites but his social development appeared to be normal.
Today, Delmer is a bright young boy and lives in PLN III. He is still very protective of his younger sister Erika,
who is also at PLN. Delmer loves to learn and is even picking up on the English language swiftly.
