Alma Martinez
In the past Alma and her brother Christopher lived a life of poverty and neglect with her grandfather in the
mountains near the village of Culmí. Her mother, abandoned by Alma’s father, was homeless living on the
streets of Catacamas. During this time the children were left in the care of a thirteen year old cousin for
much of the day while their grandfather farmed higher up in the mountains. Alma and Christopher received
little care while spending the day alone in the house. Alma was admitted to PLN in November of 1992
with hepatitis, grade II malnutrition, parasites and chronic anemia. She was also chronically infected with
scabies. Alma has recovered well and is a beautiful young lady with a sweet disposition. She is currently
studying tourism in career courses and lives in PLN three, the transitional living home.
