Alberto Benites
Alberto entered the Por Los Niños home in October 1999 at 11 months old. Alberto came to Por Los Niños
from the mountain village of Villa Nueva de Copapan. His mother died in child birth. His father, who was
from the remote Mosquitia area of eastern Honduras, left Alberto in the care of his mother’s sister, Cristina,
soon after his mother’s death. Cristina fought to provide for her family but nursed Alberto along with her
own baby. Alberta’s father never returned to get him. Cristina and her family struggled to survive on an
income of $30 to $40 per month. Cristina lived in severe poverty with four children of her own and came to
Por Los Niños for help.
Upon admission to PLN, Alberto was in a poor state of health. He suffered from grade two malnutrition, a
chest infection, and parasites. He was extremely small for his age, weighing only 14 pounds.
Alberto is affectionately known at the village as Tito. Tito’s laughter can be heard all throughout PLN. He is
a shining light to everyone he meets. Tito loves to sing and entertain. He will sing accapella for a crowd at
a moments notice. Tito will grow into a strong, vibrant young man thanks to the love of PLN and his
sponsors.
